Public Awareness Through Bazaars
Founded in 1962, MINDS is one of the largest and oldest Voluntary Welfare Organisation (VWO) in Singapore serving some 2,400 persons with intellectual disability. We began with a classroom for just 26 children in Towner Road, pioneered by a group of philanthropists who believed in providing equal opportnities for children with special needs.
Today, we run four special schools for children aged 7-18, and three employment development centres and three training and devlopment centres for the adult population. We also run a multi-service residential home for those requiring such services.
Our Initiatives
MINDS STOCKING CHALLENGE
The MINDS Christmas Stocking Challenge (MCSC) is a unique community initiative originated from MINDS. It empowers persons with intellectual disability while bringing festive joy to more than 6,000 disadvantaged and/or disabled persons in Singapore.
Working with registered voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs), we identify individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds (low-income, dysfunctional families) and/or persons with disabilities (intellectual, physical, sensory) who will receive a present-filled stocking for Christmas.
What makes the initiative unique is that each stocking is created and packed by clients from MINDS' Employment Development Centres (EDCs) as part of the sheltered workshop and enterprise programme. Lastly, it is a initiative involving the community as the stockings can be sponsored by both individual and corporate well-wishers at $10 each.
MINDS has run the MCSC successfully for 2 consecutive years. With your support, we brought joy to 6,900 and 7,800 under privelleged children and persons during Christmas in 2011 and 2012. The project also created work opportunities for more than 50 MINDS clients. Who said having a disability meant not being able to help others? Our clients have clearly demonstrated that the opposite is true!

MINDS Social Enterprise was started in 2000 to create additional avenues offering employment and income opportunities for persons with intellectual disability. It has proven to be a viable alternative of creating employment for this group of very special people, resulting in the formalisation of some of our in-house industries. MINDS Craft is one such example where art serves as a form of therapy and self-expression.
MINDS Craft specialises in a wide range of artforms such as mosaic tiling, glass painting, silkscreen printing, book binding, metal tooling and various painting styles. We are constantly expanding our product range and updating our designs while maintaining high standards of quality.
To be a world-class voluntary welfare organisation that advances the development, well being and aspirations of persons with intellectual disability and their integration into society.
